Sandflies sind winzige schwarze Mücken, die eine kleine, stark juckende Bißwunde verursachen. Auch nach Tagen jucken die Bisse noch und wenn man kratzt, können sie sich leicht entzünden. Die Stichen sehen schlimmer aus, als sie wirklich sind. Sie sind ungefährlich.

Wo?
Sie kommen besonders zahlreich an Wasserläufen vor, denn dort leben Millionen ihrer Larven.
In Neuseeland trifft man vor allem im Sommer und an der Westküste der Südinsel auf sie.

Wieso?
Nur das Weibchen beißt, da es eine Blutmahlzeit benötigt, bevor es seine Eier ablegen kann.

Wie kann man sich schützen?
Vor allem auf Wanderungen sollte man lange Hosen und immer Strümpfe tragen. Wer wenig Angriffsfläche bietet, wird auch weniger gebissen.

In Reiseführern wird oft das Abwehrgel “Dimp” empfohlen, allerdings bezweifle ich, dass es für die menschliche Haut wirklich geeignet ist. Es ist so aggressiv, dass es teilweise Stoffe und andere Dinge angreift und auflöst. Dafür verbrennt es den Sandflies sprichwörtlich die Füße und wehrt sie somit erfolgreich ab.

Herkömmliche Mückenmittel wie Autan zum Beispiel, können wirken oder auch nicht. Ich habe die Erfahrung gemacht, dass mit Autan deutlich weniger Sandflies in meine Nähe kamen als ohne. Allerdings scheine ich den Sandflies sowieso nicht zu gefallen, da ich in vier Wochen maximal fünf mal gebissen wurde und die Bisse dann auch nicht die typische rote Färbung hatten. Und ich habe nicht jeden Tag Autan benutzt.

Andere Teilnehmer schmierten sich mit diversen Mittel ein und wurden trotzdem dutzende Male gebissen.

Meine Empfehlung: Auch wenn es kurze Hosenwetter ist, zieht euch lange Hosen an. Das hilft am besten. Wenn ihr ein Abwehrmittel kaufen wollt, tut das auf jeden Fall vor Ort. Die Mittel sind einfach besser.
Wenn euch eine Sandfly beißt und ihr sie dabei erwischt, dann schlagt sie nicht tot, sondern streift sie mit dem Finger über der Haut ab.
Vermeidet an den stark juckenden Stichen zu kratzen (leichter gesagt als getan, ich weiß), das macht es nur noch schlimmer und kann zu bösen Entzündungen führen. Gelprodukte mit kühlender Wirkung, können den Juckreiz lindern.

Lasst euch von den Sandflies Neuseeland nicht vermiesen, spätestens im Inland oder an der Ostküste seid ihr sie wieder los…
